Dalton, GA – September 16, 2020 – Peter Richman Spirer, one of the early leaders in the carpet industry, passed away on Friday, September 10, 2020, at his home in Cartersville, GA. Mr. Spirer represented the best of the entrepreneurial spirit of the carpet industry for decades. His work was and will be recognized as pushing the carpet industry forward and is responsible for many trends that exist to this day.
“Peter, as one of the first chairmen of CRI, was a special leader and figure in our industry,” CRI President Joe Yarbrough said. “His leadership and ability to innovate helped shape our industry.”
Mr. Spirer founded Horizon Industries in 1972 and grew the business with unique product platforms. His marketing and design abilities made Horizon one of the most visible and successful brands in the industry. By the early 1980’s, Horizon was the 6th largest carpet mill in the US.
He was well thought of by colleagues and competitors across the carpet industry
“Peter was completely an original,” said Bob Shaw of Engineered Floors. “He was always looking at how to do things in new and innovative ways. Without a doubt he was an icon of our industry.”
“Peter was a creative individual, designing products and developing concepts sometimes even before the industry was prepared for them,” said Ralph Boe, a friend and former colleague.
Even in retirement, Mr. Spirer remained active as both a guest lecturer of art and world traveler with friends and family.
“We at CRI are sorrowed by the passing of Peter Spirer as he will be greatly missed,” Yarbrough said. “Our deepest condolences to his family in this difficult time.”
Men and women like Mr. Spirer have made the carpet industry what it is today. For everyone at CRI, our thoughts and prayers are with Mr. Spirer’s family and loved ones.
