SOA Cleaning Solutions Adds Trio of Products

CRI Seal of ApprovalCRI is proud to announce the addition of three new cleaning solutions under the CRI Seal of Approval Program, upping the total to 203 products now certfiied in the program. The trend of more and more solutions earning certification as word continues to spread that some carpet manufacturers have made a decision to tie carpet warranties to the use of CRI SOA- approved products.

The Petco Company has two new products on the list: Petco Stain and Odor Remover for Dogs and Petco Stain and Odor Remover for Cats. It is joined by Cesar Millan Dog Whisperer Odor & Stain Remover on the list of solutions to qualify. Both Petco products are manufactured by Petco, which is headquartered in San Diego, CA, while Cesar Millan's product is made by the Bramton Company, out of Dallas, TX.

Each product passed a series of stringent tests performed by an independent laboratory in order to make the list of cleaning solutions. The tests for spot removers, pre-sprays and in-tank solutions include protocols for efficacy (removing stains), resoiling (whether the product attracts soil at an accelerated rate), pH (excessively acid or alkaline products can affect dyes and fibers), optical brighteners (can adversely affect color, appearance and performance) and colorfastness to light (residues on pile yarn can accelerate color change).

Four Vacuum Cleaners Awarded SOA/Green Label Designation

Green Label/SOA Vacuums - Gold, Silver, Bronze FanA total of four new vacuum cleaners, including two gold label designations, have earned the designation as Green Label/Seal of Approval Approved vacuum cleaners.

The new Seal of Approval/Green Label vacuum program is a tiered program with bronze level requiring a 10% improvement of cleaning performance over the existing Green Label program. A gold level machine must also meet a higher dust containment standard. The new gold standard requires that a machine has no more than 35 micrograms of dust particle emission. The old standard allowed for 100 micrograms of dust particle emission.

All four vacuum cleaners are manufactured by Tacony Corporation, based in Fenton, MO. The Riccar RSL4 SuprLite and the Simplicity F3600 Freedom each earned a gold designation signifying the highest level. The Simplicity Verve and the Riccar Delux Pristine Canister each earned bronze certification.

To earn the CRI Seal of Approval/Green Label certification, vacuums must pass the following independent laboratory tests:

  • Soil removal - CRI uses NASA-enhanced x-ray fluorescence technology to measure the precise amount of soil removed from carpet.
  • Dust containment - The vacuum must not release more than 100 micrograms of dust particles per cubic meter of air, keeping dirt and dust locked tight in the vacuum - not escaping back into the air where it can be breathed.
  • Carpet texture retention - The vacuum must not affect the texture of the carpet more than a one-step change based on one year of normal vacuum use

There are now a total of 33 certified vacuums in the recently announced program.

Nilfisk-Advance Adds Four More to SOA Extractor Program

SOA Extractor - Gold, Silver, Bronze FanNilfisk-Advance continues to add to its product lines certified under the Seal of Approval category for extractor equipment with the addition of three more machines to the program. The Nilfisk AX651, Nilfisk Ax410 and the Nilfisk AX310 bring the total number of Nilfisk machines to 15 in the program.

Nilfisk-Advance is headquartered in Plymouth, MN and the AX310 earned certification at the silver level, assuring customers that it removes stains and soil from carpet without damaging the carpet pile or causing resoiling problems. Both of the other products earned bronze designation.

The CRI Seal of Approval program tests the effectiveness of carpet cleaning equipment and certifies deep cleaning extractors that effectively remove soil without damage to the carpet. Not all extractors are good enough to earn this distinction; the blue and green seal helps customers recognize they are buying quality products. An independent laboratory administers the CRI Seal of Approval testing for extractors. To quality for the Seal, extractors must meet stringent standards in all three-test categories:

  • Amount of soil removed from the carpet
  • Amount of residual moisture removed from the carpet from a wet cleaning process
  • Impact of the equipment on carpet fibers and appearance

In addition, soil removal efficiency is rated on three levels. Extractors that exceed average soil removal receive a Bronze Seal rating. Those achieving higher soil removal receive a Silver rating and those receiving the highest level of measurable soil removal are awarded a Gold level Seal of Approval. A total of 77 extractors have earned SOA certification.

Carpet cleaning product, methods and equipment are improving all the time, but not all cleaning products clean equally well. CRI tested an assortment of carpet cleaning solutions and equipment and found a wide variance in how well these products work - and discovered that some even damage carpet.

The CRI Seal of Approval program identifies effective carpet cleaning solutions and equipment that clean carpet right the first time and protects a facility's carpet investment. Not all products clean well enough to earn the Seal of Approval distinction, so look for the blue and green CRI Seal of Approval as proof that you are purchasing or using a quality product.

Windsor Adds Four to SOA Systems Program

Windsor Industries passed the battery of tests to earn certification as a Seal of Approval Deep Cleaning Systems in the SOA Program with four of its systems. Windsor Industries now has 11 systems qualified for the program. Those systems earning Gold level designations for Windsor were the Windsor Clipper CLP12 and the Priza. The Voyage Duo and the Chariot each earned silver recognition. Windsor Industries is headquartered in Englewood, CO.

The deep cleaning system is the combination of that machine and a particular cleaning solution, following a set procedure. The cleaning solution is tested under the protocol for the solutions testing and then a set procedure is designated and followed. The product is then tested, like the extractors, for soil removal, water retention and texture retention. There are now a total of 43 systems earning certification in the category.
