Seven More Solutions Earn SOA Designation

CRI Seal of ApprovalThe addition of seven cleaning solutions into the CRI Seal of Approval family continues the trend of more and more solutions earning certification as word continues to spread that some carpet manufacturers have made a decision to tie carpet warranties to the use of CRI SOA-approved products.

Three of the new SOA products are spot removers, while two are in-tank solutions, one is a pre-spray product and one has qualified as both an in-tank and pre-spray solution. The total number of certified products has now reached 159.

Ecolab, Inc., based out of St. Paul, MN, manufacturers four of the new products. Ecolab's products include: a spot remover (Revitalize Miracle Spotter); a pre-spray (Revitalize Carpet & Upholstery Pre-spray); an in-tank solution (Revitalize Carpet & Upholstery Extraction Cleaner); and a product certified as both a pre-spray and in-tank solution (Perfusion).

Racine Industries also has a spot remover certified in its Host Spot remover. Racine is headquartered in Racine, WI. Harvard Chemical Research Inc., out of Atlanta, GA, has a new in-tank solution certified in its Premium Extraction Liquid and Rendall's Certified Spotter joins the list as a new spot remover. Rendall's is manufactured by Rendall's Certified Cleaning SVS out of Howell, MI.

Each product passed a series of stringent tests performed by an independent laboratory in order to make the list of cleaning solutions. The tests for spot removers, pre-sprays and in-tank solutions include protocols for efficacy (removing stains), resoiling (whether the product attracts soil at an accelerated rate), pH (excessively acid or alkaline products can affect dyes and fibers), optical brighteners (can adversely affect color, appearance and performance) and colorfastness to light (residues on pile yarn can accelerate color change).

Racine Industries Has Pair of Systems SOA Certified

The Host AV1-A Dry Carpet Cleaning System and the Reliant Dry Carpet System each passed the battery of tests to earn certification as a Seal of Approval Deep Cleaning Systems in the SOA Program. Both systems incorporate the Host Dry Carpet Cleaner manufactured by Racine Industries, located in Racine, WI.

The deep cleaning system is the combination of that machine and a particular cleaning solution, following a set procedure. The cleaning solution is tested under the protocol for the solutions testing and then a set procedure is designated and followed. The product is then tested, like the extractors, for soil removal, water retention and texture retention. Both systems earned bronze level certification. There are now a total of 36 systems earning certification in the category.

ProTeam Vacuums Earn Green Label/SOA Designation

Green Label/SOA Vacuums - Gold, Silver, Bronze FanA trio of vacuum cleaners manufactured by ProTeam has earned the designation as Green Label/Seal of Approval Approved vacuum cleaners, including the programs first Gold certified product.

The new Seal of Approval/Green Label vacuum program is a tiered program with bronze level requiring a 10% improvement of cleaning performance over the existing Green Label program. A gold level machine must also meet a higher dust containment standard. The new gold standard requires that a machine has no more than 35 micrograms of dust particle emission. The old standard allowed for 100 micrograms of dust particle emission ProTeam's Sierra w/Electric Power Nozzle, a commercial backpack unit, earned gold certification. It was joined by the ProTeam ProForce 1500XP (commercial upright) and the ProTeam Super Coach w/154e Head (commercial backpack), each which earned bronze certification. To earn the CRI Seal of Approval/Green Label certification, vacuums must pass the following independent laboratory tests:

  • Soil removal - CRI uses NASA-enhanced x-ray fluorescence technology to measure the precise amount of soil removed from carpet
  • Dust containment - The vacuum must not release more than 100 micrograms of dust particles per cubic meter of air, keeping dirt and dust locked tight in the vacuum - not escaping back into the air where it can be breathed
  • Carpet texture retention - The vacuum must not affect the texture of the carpet more than a one-step change based on one year of normal vacuum use

There are now a total of 19 certified vacuums in the recently announced program.

Sustainable Is Attainable: Redesigning the Textile Industry

The 2008 Fiber Surface Conference is scheduled for February 12 & 13. The entire conference will have a single focus - sustainability. Everyone has heard the words, "green", environmentally friendly, conservation, reducing the carbon footprint, and sustainability. As the marketplace embraces the "earth friendly initiative", it is necessary for the supply chain, service providers, etc., to understand the direction the market is headed and how to participate and be successful. Dr. Robert Peoples, CRI's Director of Sustainability will participate on a panel entitled an Overview of Sustainable Textile Standards.

The conference will be held in Charlotte, NC at the Sheraton Airport Plaza. Opportunities also exist for a limited number of corporate sponsors for the conference and for tabletop exhibits, and demonstrations of programs and products relevant to the theme of the conference.

Among those honored for their service to CRI and its committee structure were Carl Bouckaert, Gary Lanser, Dr. Howard Elder, Frank Endrenyi and Gerald Embry. Tandus' Paul Evans was also honored with the Joseph J. Smrekar Award for his exemplary service to the industry and to the CRI.

For information on sponsorships, tabletop demonstrations or conference attendance please contact Kim Pettit at SYFA (704-824-3522) or Bob Barker at AFMA (727-772-1685).

ANSI Touts News Carpet Sustainability Assessment Standard

American National Standards InstitueThe American National Standards Institute (ANSI) recently ran an article in its news and publications site touting the new NSF 140-2007, Sustainable Carpet Assessment Standard PDF (PDF 75 KB) Need help with PDF?. The Carpet and Rug Institute (CRI) teamed with NSF International, an ANSI accredited standards developer, to design a certification system for sustainable carpeting. End users, architects, government officials, academics, and manufacturers weighed in on the new standard, which measures the environmental footprint of carpet products in five major performance categories.

Developed over a nearly five-year process, the new standard applies to carpets for all types of buildings, including commercial office, education, government, healthcare, and hospitality. The first carpet products to be certified by the new standard are expected to be available in April 2008.
